Ne&Mo Trading
Ne&Mo Trading is the brand we use for our trading activities, that support clean, circular and fair products.
With "Clean" we mean free of any chemicals and pesticides, or at least as much as allowed by regulatory requirements in the EU. Do not underestimate how much is required to get a product into the country...
We look for agricultural products from small scale, emerging farmers in Southern Africa. Through our partners on the ground such as cooperatives or social enterprises, we identify producers of specialized premium products with health benefits for the consumer.
With "circular" we mean that we do our utmost to reduce waste during production, packaging, transport, trade and end-use, by carefully choosing our suppliers, materials etc. If youo have any tips and advce, we are very open to this...
With "fair" we mean that farmer and producer should make a fair cut. We take 15% for our business expenses and negotiate a similar margin by our retailers. This means our margin is similar to that of the local producers. Transport costs are usually a very large percentage, unfortunately...one of the big hurdles in fair access to market for emerging markets. But even here we are always looking for new ways.
Our products may not be price competitive, but we aim to maximize value addition by the local producers and partners. Our model also aims to minimize the number of trading steps between producer and consumer. This way the consumer knows that the farmer earns a significant share in the price paid at the shop.
This means for instance buying it packaged ready for retail, not in bulk. All products are fully packaged or bottled close to the farm. How you see it in the shop, is how it left the country of origin.
Also, we only work with producers and partners that work with fair trade and organic business practices. Through visits and relationship building Ne&Mo and the partners work together to ensure best practice is implemented at all stages of production. Products are thoroughly tested for any pesticides etc.
We do not insist on international certification because of the prohibitive costs for the producers. We'd rather see this spent on training and development...
We are always looking for new partners in Southern Africa. Currently, there are partnerships under development for essential oils and coffee. If you have any tips, ideas or good contacts, please let us know.
